Here's the inside scoop on the most notable apps of the week
First, an apology.
Because of our excitement to bring you our latest infographic, we paused last Friday’s edition of Top Apps of the Week. It was perfect timing. Movement in the app store was relatively stagnant, and by and large, the only worthwhile news was Pokémon Go held strong at no.1 on both Google Play and iOS, and the many rip-offs, derivations, and cash-ins it spawned were piggybacking their way up the charts.
So, now that we’re all caught up, let’s move on to this week’s list of the app store’s biggest winners and losers.
Rising Apps of the Week:
iOS: Mercari
If you asked me, I’d have told you there are far too many second-hand shopping apps. A few months ago, you couldn’t go a full TV commercial break or surf online without seeing an advertisement for letgo or Wallapop. And yet, here we are. Despite a slight dip, Mercari continues to climb in downloads.
Google Play: Everalbum
On Wednesday, we wrote that Google Play’s Photography category is dangerously close to oversaturation. Perhaps in avoiding it altogether, Everalbum, an app that allows users organize photos, found success. It’s currently categorized as “Productivity.”
Top New Apps of the Week:
iOS: Nike+
Does anything really need to be said about Nike’s new shopping app? I mean, look at that download trajectory.
Google Play: Prisma
Like Everalbum, Prism, a photo app that allows users to turn pictures into “awesome artworks,” avoided the Photography category. Rather they're categorized as “Media and Video,” and the results speak for themselves.
Falling Apps of the Week
iOS: Poke Radar
Has the Pokémon Go craze finally run its course? It was knocked out of the top spot on iOS (albeit temporarily), and many hangers-on have slipped down the charts, including Poke Radar.
Google Play: Game of Life Big Screen
What is it with board games and the app store? We wrote about it in our Games Report, but essentially, the Board game category is a dead zone. The Game of Life is no exception.
Breakout Apps of the Week
iOS and Google Play: Youtube Music
Normally we highlight a Breakout app on both Google Play and iOS, but this week, Youtube Music shot up the rankings (unseating Pokémon Go on iOS in the process) in both stores.
