Top Apps of the Week: Shark Week Edition

Jul 01, 2016

Jul 01, 2016

Welcome to a special edition of “Top Apps of the Week.”

Normally on Friday, we take a look at some of the most notable apps from the week that was, but today, we’re changing things up. Although we’re still recapping the week's biggest winners and losers, we’ve narrowed our focus from the entirety of the iOS and Google Play app stores to just shark-themed apps.

Why you ask? It’s "Shark Week!"

Rising Apps of the Week:

iOS: Hungry Shark Evolution

Downloads of Hungry Shark Evolution had been in decline since then beginning of June, but starting at the tail end of last week, rates increased by as much as 19 percent.

Google Play: Sharks VR

Discovery Channel’s emphasis on virtual reality has rubbed off on this third-party app, as users flocked to download.

Falling Apps of the Week:

iOS: Shark Dash

This cartoonish app has had a rough go of it of late, and "Shark Week" did little to boost download volumes. Looks like this one might go fins down.

Google Play: Shark Evolution

A well-timed user acquisition campaign wasn’t enough to save this clicker game, as downloads dropped off steeply over the last week or so.

Top New Apps:

iOS: Shark Mod Free

The popularity of "Shark Week" has spilled over into the world of Minecraft, as this app, released at the end of May, has maintained a steady and respectable download rate.

Google Play: Dorsal Shark Reports

Recently launched, the Dorsal app let’s users report shark sightings. Usage is up, but for the sake of our beach-going summer, let’s just hope the downloads are a result of precautionary meaures and not, well, you know.

Breakout Apps of the Week:

Normally, we like to showcase apps from both the iOS and Google Play app stores, as movement in one does not necessarily imply movement in another. A "rising" app in Google Play could have had a pedestrain week on iOS, for example. This week, though, Global Shark Tracker had such a drastic uptick in downloads across both stores that it would be disingenuous to feauture another app for no other reason than symmetry.
